Planning a trip? Check out the Desert National Wildlife Refuge website.
Spanning over 1.6 million acres, it is the largest wildlife refuge in the contiguous United States. Ranging from creosote bush flats to Joshua tree woodlands, it is one
of the Mojave Desert’s most ecologically diverse regions. This area was established in 1936 primarily as a habitat for desert bighorn sheep, a species whose water management is perfectly adapted to the arid landscape.
