Developed in 1938 and powered by the R-2800 engine, its distinct gull wings supported a giant 13 foot propeller. Initial landing issues delayed its carrier deployment, but it ultimately earned a 11:1 kill ratio, downing 2,140 enemy aircraft and a MiG-15 in Korea. With 13 variants, it has the record for the longest production run of any WWII fighter.
