Construction of this symmetrical, Neoclassical-federal style National Historic Landmark and Freedom Trail Site concluded in 1798. Atop Beacon Hill near the Boston Common, the legislative and executive branches of the government are centrally located downtown. Its gold dome overlooks the city and was once painted dark gray to protect the Commonwealth during World War II.
