Planning a trip? Check out the Freedom Riders National Monument website.
An original group of 13 Freedom Riders set out in the spring of 1961 to protest segregation in interstate travel. In Alabama, white supremacists attacked Riders at the Anniston Greyhound Bus depot and firebombed the bus six miles outside of town. Today these sites honor people and events crucial to the enduring fight against injustice.
