In 1881 at the age of 26, Booker T. Washington became head of a school founded to educate African American students. Several of the original buildings erected on the campus of today’s Tuskegee University still are in use. Tours of the historic district visit the George Washington Carver Museum and The Oaks, Washington’s home.
