In California’s Mojave Desert, an 1881 silver strike triggered a rush that pocked the hills with hundreds of mines and more than $20 million in ore. When prices fell a dozen years later, it was left a near-instant ghost town. In the 1950s, Walter Knott rebuilt the streetscape and donated it to San Bernardino County. It is now a Historical Landmark called California’s “Silver Rush Ghost Town.”
