Crater Lake and Wizard Island occupy a caldera, a deep volcanic basin formed after Mount Mazama’s eruption and collapse more than 7,700 years ago. The clear lake water, considered by experts to be some of the purest on Earth, plunges to a maximum depth of 1,943 feet, making Crater Lake the deepest lake in the nation and one of the 10 deepest in the world.
