For generations, the mystery of Death Valley’s uphill- moving “sailing stones” baffled scientists. In 2014, experts determined that melting winter ice at Racetrack Playa’s relatively high elevation breaks into large floating panels that push rocks in front of them as they are driven by the wind, leaving distinctive scars in the nearly level desert lake bed.
