Fort Griffin features ruins, camping, and is home to the Official State Longhorn Herd. The U.S. military established the fort in 1867, and it was a major support post during the Red River War of 1874. Today, the site is recognized as a State Antiquities Landmark on the Great Western Trail and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
