Planning a trip? Check out Fort McKavett at the Texas Historical Commission.
This well-preserved West Texas fort served throughout the Indian Wars period (1850-1875). It was home to all four regiments of the famous Buffalo Soldiers and was called ‘the prettiest post in Texas’ by General William T. Sherman. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Frontier Army life by visiting several original buildings, including officers’ quarters, an enlisted barracks, and the post hospital.
