Ambitious hikers depart the Halemau'u Trailhead at 7,990 feet for long, rigorous treks on the famed volcano. Most others enjoy the 1.1-mile hike across the Rainbow Bridge to an overlook offering epic views. Another popular option is continuing on about another mile down a series of spectacular switchbacks to the Haleakalā Crater floor.
