Lava Butte erupted 7,000 years ago and is one of over 400 cinder cones on the flanks of Newberry Volcano. After cinders piled up to form the butte, lava flowed out of its base, forming the lava flow that extends four miles to the Deschutes River, where it dammed the flow of water. Atop Lava Butte is a seasonally staffed, century-old fire lookout.
