Oregon’s longest uncollapsed lava tube was formed during Newberry Volcano’s massive eruptions about 65,000 years ago. Flows of smooth, liquid lava formed pahoehoe (pa-hoy-hoy) basalt, resulting in the mile-long cave with a ceiling 58 feet above the floor and 50 feet wide in places. The cave is completely dark and remains 42°F year-round.
