American Samoa’s idyllic South Seas paradise setting belies the dramatic geologic drama occurring deep below the surface. The three volcanic islands that host national park visitors are located on a “hot spot” on the Pacific Plate. As this tectonic feature slowly shifts from southeast to northwest, the islands move with it, creeping across the South Pacific at the rate of about three inches a year.
