Though construction of this National Historic Landmark began in 1867, it was not declared complete until 1899, with an exorbitant price tag exceeding $800 million in today’s dollars. Built of white granite atop State Street Hill, it serves the State Legislature and is part of the Lafayette Park Historic District. Its design includes Renaissance Classical and Romanesque styles and ornate carvings.
