Theodore Roosevelt hunted American bison when he first came to North Dakota. Later, he helped save the species. TR’s conservation views were shaped while hunting and ranching in the state’s badlands. The 26th president later served as honorary president of the American Bison Society, which helped reintroduce the almost extinct mammals to their natural habitats.
