Settlement and development of villages along the 138-mile-long Byway followed the construction of historic lighthouses and U.S. Coast Guard stations. Scenic views along the corridor include lighthouses and 21 coastal villages, as well as miles of rich natural ecosystems of estuaries, dunes, marshes, tidal flats, and maritime forests.
