The park area was a lush, forested landscape roamed by large and small dinosaurs more than 200 million years ago. Mineral-rich water that saturated fallen trees crystallized the wood through time, creating the rock-hard texture and vibrant rainbow-like colors that characterize today’s “petrified” trees. Plant and animal fossils also tell the story of the park area’s verdant past.
