The shoals of the Watauga River create a shallow area suitable for crossing. This site made the location ideal for a thriving frontier settlement. On September 25, 1780, 400 mounted militia from southwest Virginia utilized this crossing site to join the Overmountain men prior to their significant victory at the battle of Kings Mountain.
