This is the smallest, shallowest, and coldest of Earth’s oceans. It spans about 5.4 million square miles and reaches a depth of 18,210 feet. While largely covered in sea ice for most of the year, its sea ice minimum has declined over 40% since 1979 – an indicator of a changing climate. Still, bowhead whales and polar bears continue to roam its waters under skies stained by northern lights.
