Opened in 1929 to accommodate growing vehicular traffic, the original Navajo Bridge was in service for 66 years. In 1995, motorists were diverted to a modern, stouter bridge and a safer crossing of the Colorado River 470 feet below. The older structure today is a pedestrian bridge offering thrilling views of Grand Canyon scenery.
