Named ‘El Desierto Pintado’ by Spaniards, the Painted Desert spans much of the region comprising Petrified Forest National Park and the Navajo Nation of Arizona. Shale, siltstone and mudstone of the Triassic Chinle Formation create colorful stratified red and lavender hills. Erosion reveals fossilized plants and animals and dinosaur tracks.
