Perched over a mile off Oregon’s coast, this lighthouse was first lit in 1881. Its infamously perilous construction claimed the life of its master mason John Trewavas. Nicknamed “Terrible Tilly,” it operated for 77 years before being decommissioned in 1957. This isolated station now stands within the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge as one of the state’s most dramatic coastal landmarks.
