Over 50,000 servicemen served aboard the Essex-class “Fighting I” aircraft carrier between 1943 and 1974, serving tours of duty in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. She survived five kamikaze attacks and a torpedo strike in the Pacific and went on to serve as the recovery vessel for NASA’s Gemini and Mercury missions. Today she’s restored as a museum ship on the Hudson River.
