On December 12, 1862, the USS Cairo, one of the Union Navy’s new ironclad ships, was rocked by two explosions and sank in the Yazoo River while under fire. Salvaged in 1964, the reconstructed Civil War gunboat is on display at Vicksburg National Military Park. Visitors board the gunboat and learn its story through museum exhibits.
