Along California’s central coast, this sparsely populated region hosts 4-5 million visitors a year for ocean vistas, redwood canyons, and cliffside hiking. Once called “el sur grande” by Spanish colonists, this 100-mile stretch was largely roadless until the 20th century. Protection measures place over half of the coastline under public or conservation ownership to ensure its wilderness stays wild.
