The “Pride of the Pacific” served as a powerful deterrent to attacks on San Francisco Harbor during the Civil War and returned to duty during World War II. Built of brick and mortar in the Third System style, its 126 cannons never fired. Saved from demolition, the thoughtful design of the Golden Gate Bridge overhead preserved the Site.
