On July 17, 1944, one of the most devastating military disasters on the WWII Homefront occurred in Port Chicago. Munitions loaded onto ships detonated and instantly killed 320 people, the majority being African American soldiers. As a result, soldiers protested unsafe working conditions bringing about the Port Chicago Mutiny and many arrests.
