This National Historic Landmark and State Historical Park tells California and Gold Rush history. The first permanent European colonial settlement in the Central Valley,
New Helvetia, was established in 1839 by John Sutter. Native people built the Fort, and their exploited labor made its many industries possible. Today, it spans a city block and contains Sacramento’s oldest existing structure.
