Founded as Charles Town in 1670 as a nod to King Charles II by English colonists, this settlement became a thriving port city despite centuries of fires, epidemics, hurricanes, and war. No longer reliant on shipping, Charleston is famous for its downtown “Museum Mile,” the protective gaze of Fort Sumter, and waterfront features including the Pineapple Fountain and cable-stayed Ravenel Bridge.
