Settled on the southern shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, water access established this city as a major port. Completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal and St. Mary’s Falls Canal helped the city grow from trading post to major industrial hub. Known too as a medical and research hub, the “Emerald Necklace” park system encircles the city to facilitate outdoor recreation.
