Named after a 16th century explorer, the “Smithsonian of the South” is the cultural, governmental, and educational heart of the state. Leaders built the site near the state’s geographical center as a planned capital city in 1792. Once headquarters of the Confederacy, it avoided decimation during the Civil War to become a bustling retail center and member of the state’s Research Triangle.
