Originally constructed in 1883 as a tollway and used to transport ore from nearby mines, this section of the San Juan Skyway can be treacherous in harsh weather and is known for hairpin turns and stunning views. The route’s highest point is at the peak of Red Mountain Pass at over 11,000 feet. Jagged mountains, dense forest, steep gorges, and small historic towns are accessible from the roadway.
