Completed in 1938, this Columbia River project was the first federal lock and dam built on the Columbia and Snake River systems. Its 2,477-foot structure joined power generation to navigation. Later fish ladders and viewing windows made it equally known for salmon passage. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, it remains a defining piece of Pacific Northwest infrastructure.
