Capt. John Smith hoped to find silver, gold and a Northwest Passage in his voyages during the turn of the 17th Century. Instead of finding treasure, he mapped miles of waterways and hundreds of Native American communities within the Chesapeake Bay. The Captain John Smith Historic Trail is one of two water trails in the National Historic Trail system.
