This marble memorial honoring the 26,000 DC men and women who served is inscribed with the names of the 499 who gave their lives during World War I. President Herbert Hoover spoke at its 1931 dedication ceremony, and a band directed by John Philip Sousa performed for thousands of attendees and a national radio audience.
