A series of earthquakes between 1811 and 1812 created this 15,000 acre lake by causing the Mississippi River to flow backwards and flood a cypress forest . These trees still lurk below the waters depths and rise above the surface, creating a unique environment for boaters and fishers. Bald eagles descend on this National Natural Landmark in the winter and the park hosts an annual Reelfoot Eagle Festival.
