This surreal landscape in New Mexico’s Tularosa Basin was formed by Little Black Peak’s eruption 5,000-years ago, creating one of the youngest lava flows in the continental U.S. The recreation area sits on the most visually striking sections of the 44-mile Malpais lava field. Among its unique wildlife is the Rock Pocket Mouse, whose dark fur offers perfect camouflage against the black volcanic rock.
