The British warship HMS Fowey struck one of the jagged coral reefs off the South Florida coast and sunk in 1748. The sailing ship became the namesake of this iron pile structure first lit in 1878 to warn mariners of the beautiful but dangerous underwater hazards. The “Eye of Miami’s” solar-powered light beams about 17 miles out to sea.
