In 1539, Hernando De Soto landed with nine ships and 600 soldiers near present day Tampa Bay in a park characterized by mangrove swamp and pine flatlands. Sent by King Charles V of Spain, this crew murdered and enslaved indigenous peoples defending their homeland. Living history demonstrations, exhibits, artifacts, and tours detail their long journey to conquer, populate, and pacify.
