French efforts to colonize along the St. Johns River during the 16th century were brief and bloody. The fort was captured by Spanish soldiers in 1565, and about 140 prisoners were put to death. A replica fort, visitor center exhibits and self-guided tour tell the stories of Fort Caroline and the area’s Timucua Native Americans.
