Over time, French, Spanish, British, and U.S. governments all claimed control of this Northeast Florida port city. It weathered multiple occupations during the Civil War and the destruction of the Great Fire of 1901. Oceanfront and riverfront parks, memorials, gardens, trail systems, and preserves, including the Timucuan Preserve, draw visitors year round to this city on the banks of the St. Johns River.
