The 98-foot lighthouse first lit in 1884 on the eastern tip of a slice of Gulf of Mexico paradise is an iron structure built to withstand hurricanes. It has done so successfully. The tower is not open to the public, but the island’s iconic symbol is still in operation as it charms beachgoers who flock to the site, many walking the beach hunched over in the “Sanibel stoop” as they search for sea shells.
