At 14,494 feet, Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the lower 48 states. Due to its popularity among hikers and rock climbers in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, permits are required year-round. The shortest route to the summit is a challenging 10.7 miles from Whitney Portal and requires equipment when snow-covered from October to June.
