Planning a trip? Check out the Saint Francis Dam Disaster National Monument website.
On March 12, 1928, just days after the reservoir behind it was filled to capacity, the concrete wall of the dam northwest of Los Angeles collapsed. Billions of gallons of water flooded communities, destroyed buildings and farmland and killed hundreds of people downstream. The site honoring the victims preserves dam remnants.
