Over 150 military prisons held troops during the Civil War, including Camp Sumter in Georgia. Due to appalling conditions, almost one-third of the captured Union soldiers never left and are interred at the Andersonville National Cemetery. Today it’s a monument to American POWs and includes the National Prisoner of War Museum.
