Planning a trip? Check out the Fort Pulaski National Monument website.
Completed in 1847, the fortress was built to protect Savannah from attack by overseas enemies. It was occupied by Confederate troops early in the Civil War, but soon fell to Union forces, and Savannah’s role as a Southern supply port ended. Visitors take guided or self-guided fort tours, watch 18th-century weapons demonstrations, hike, bike, paddle, fish and bird watch.
