Ocmulgee Mounds preserves 17,000 years of continuous human habitation from Ice Age Hunters to the Muscogee of historic times. Carrying earth by hand in bags, thousands of Mississippian workers (900 CE-1250 CE) built the 55’ high Great Temple Mound on a high bluff overlooking the floodplain of the Ocmulgee River.
