The Haleakalā Crater is not volcanic in origin. The 19-square-mile, half-mile-deep depression was formed largely by erosion from torrential rains, which carved out large valleys along the mountain's flanks. The depression is the result of two of these canyons joining near the summit. Exploration of the crater reveals interesting plant life and geologic features.
