This geothermal area is mesmerizing evidence of the fire boiling below. Gases and steam billow from cracks in the surface as reminders of the parks ongoing volcanic activity. These thermal vents deposit tapestries of mineral color onto the banks. Hawaiians refer to the yellow sulfur stains as "kukaepele."
